  • That home is where my parent’s are. No matter what town.
  • Community involvement is rewarding and important.
  • People older than me are so much more interesting than people my age. (90% of the time)
  • Having patience is extremely important, even in an urgent matter.
  • Housing is generally way too expensive and I am lucky to be where I am right now.
  • I still have no idea what I want to do with my life, and that’s okay, because most people don’t.
  • Pre-Law is useless.
  • Tension headaches are evil.
  • A new pair of boots and some goodwill clothing can make you feel 1000x better.
  • Sitting down to eat a meal with friends or family is priceless.
  • Organization is key. (Even though sometimes it is rather hellish.)
  • A soda can make all the difference.

I’m visiting my childhood home and will walk through it for one last time in my life. I haven’t really thought of it that way until the last two or three days. My friends that I grew up with I will probably not get a chance to see again anytime soon. But, when was the last time I saw most of them anyway?

Congratulations to my slightly awkward, totally creepy, and completely best friend Walter Meek. It’s happening. You’re getting married. Please take a moment to pinch yourself, I know I will. *wink wink* I hope the hand towels I bought you are a lovely expression of how truly excited for you I am. I am! Seriously! I’m just… edging on broke. It’s taken a long time, but I’m glad you have found the perfect person.

Shameless promotion:

If you are in the Frankfort, KY area next weekend… go to the Spooktacular! All the money from the event will go to support the Franklin County Women’s Shelter. It is a good cause, especially in a time of economic crisis CAUSED in part by difficulties in the housing market. There has been an influx of people in the last year and it isn’t going to be getting any better for a while. Please help support your fellow Americans! Also, enjoy a cocktail and stare at the guy dressed as George Washington across the room. Good times for everyone.

Tullar and I just thought we’d give everyone a taste of our new digs. Be looking for an invite to our apartment warming party.

May said the city’s involvement in the fight against homelessness originated with his signing of “A Covenant of Partnership to End Chronic Homelessness,” at the U.S. Conference of Mayors in 2006.
Laura Barrett of the Homelessness and Housing Coalition of Kentucky spoke about the needs of the community.

Barrett said drug abuse, domestic violence, aging out of foster care and mental illness contribute heavily to homelessness.

According to Barrett, significant needs in Frankfort are data sharing among charitable organizations and more case management.

Barrett recommended to commissioners on behalf of local organizations the community recognize homelessness as a problem, centralize organizations to prevent “double-dipping,” and more advocacy for funding.

I hate feeling like I’ve been misquoted.

And so begins my year working to unite and inform my community.

Misquoted.

Our local library is known for the homeless population. (It, of course, is also just a phenomenal library.) I have heard a recent comment that the homeless are deterring the rest of the population. But that got me thinking. I have seen many blogs written by the homeless of larger cities (Nashville specifically). Maybe I could start a program that would get both the homeless in Frankfort to start documenting their lives and stories on the internet. This would hopefully contribute to any sort of community awareness campaign that the local homeless coalition may piece together. It may also help me create a bond with some of the individuals and help them walk through some of the services available or help them in some way.
